A bird-lover holds a banner and blows a whistle during an anti-hunting protest in Valletta on the first day of the hunting season in Malta on September 1. The protest was called by World Animal Conscience against recent concessions given to the hunting lobby by the government. The government has argued that the concessions merely bring things into line with EU regulations, but the anti-hunting lobby claims concessions have gone much further than that. Malta is an EU applicant country.
