A 370 year old Crucifix is carried out of the Church of St Mary of Jesus in Valletta on April 11, 2001. The procession was held in connection with next month's visit to the island by Pope John Paul II and his beatification of a Maltese monk Fr Gorg Preca. The procession passed through the streets of the capital which had some connection with Fr Preca. The olive wood crucifix is held in great devotion by the people of Malta. Legend has it that in 1630, the artist, Fra Umile, had wracked his brains to try and depict Christ at his greatest hour of pain, but while he slept the head of Christ was completed by an angel.
