A war veteran rests against a stone ledge during an ANZAC Day commemoration service at Pieta Military Cemetery outside Valletta on April 25, 2001. During the Gallipoli campaign in World War One, hundreds of Australians and New Zealanders were hospitalised in Malta, which was known as "the nurse of the Mediterranean". Several who didn't survive are buried on the island.
