An Australian member of the Maltese Australian Association wears the traditional rosemary sprig and a lapel badge with the Maltese and Australian flags during an ANZAC Day commemoration service at Pieta Military Cemetery outside Valletta on April 25, 2001. Rosemary is an ancient symbol of remembrance, and has special significance for Australians as it grows abundantly on the Gallipoli peninsula. During the Gallipoli campaign in World War One, hundreds of Australians and New Zealanders were hospitalised in Malta, which was known as "the nurse of the Mediterranean". Several who didn't survive are buried on the island.
