'Yes' supporters celebrate winning the referendum on European Union Membership during a victory rally organized by the IVA (Yes) Movement in Valletta March 9, 2003. Malta voted "yes" to joining the European Union in the referendum the previous day. European Commission President Romano Prodi hailed the result as "a choice for stability and growth, as well as for the peaceful reunification of Europe and the European people". Malta's Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami told a news conference 53 percent of the votes were yes and 46 percent no.
