Fort St Angelo in Valletta's Grand Harbour is lit with projections, lasers, lights and fireworks as Malta, along with nine other countries, joins the European Union at the stroke of midnight May 1, 2004. The historic fort was the centerpiece of Malta's celebrations. More than one billion television viewers are estimated to have watched the light monument and fireworks show by German artist Gert Hof.
